How to Protect Yourself Against Scammers and Deceptive Sales Tactics

Home Security

As we approach the spring and summer seasons, we will see a rise in door-to-door home security scammers. These scammers will use illegal, high-pressure tactics to try and get you to purchase a new home security system and/or sign a new contract. These salespeople may even have an alarming amount of your information, including your name, home information, the name of your spouse, etc. It is up to you to learn these tactics so you can protect yourself against scammers.

Door-to-Door Scams

The best way to avoid falling victim to a home security scam is to recognize it is a scam before it occurs. See the ways a salesperson may be attempting to deceive you below.

“You can try our system and cancel within 30 days”

The salesperson may tell you that you have a 30-day grace period to cancel your system with them, free of charge, after installation. In reality, this cancellation period may not be specified in your contract with them, so they would charge you a balance of the contract if you want to cancel your account.

Have a Question About Your System?

“We offer newer technology than Guardian Protection”

We at Guardian Protection pride ourselves on offering the most cutting-edge technology on the market. If you are ready to upgrade your system’s technologies, contact us, your local trusted security provider, so we can ensure you have the best technology available in your home.

“I work with Guardian Protection”

The salesperson may tell you that Guardian Protection has gone out of business or that their company has taken over your contract. The goal of this is to get you to purchase new equipment and/or sign a new contract.

“There is an issue with your system”

This tactic is used to enter your home and access your existing home security system. They may tamper with it and then claim that it needs to be repaired or replaced. If you have any concerns about how your system is functioning, please give us a call directly at 1.800.PROTECT so we can help you troubleshoot.

How to ensure that you’re speaking to a legitimate Guardian Protection employee:

  • Guardian Protection will not show up to your home unannounced.
  • Check to see if they are wearing a Guardian Protection uniform with our logo.
  • Make sure they have a Guardian ID.
  • When in doubt, please call our office at 1.800.PROTECT to verify that you are speaking to a Guardian Protection employee.

Always be cautious of door-to-door salespeople, especially during the upcoming season. If you are signing up for any new contract, please read it thoroughly and be sure to note the installation price, professional monitoring fees, contract period, cancellation terms, discounts, and deals. As always, please call us at 1.800.PROTECT if you have any questions or concerns. However, if you feel unsafe during this interaction or are certain that you are facing an illegal scam, please reach out to your local authorities.
